Commitment and consistency

Welcome.
It is absolutely necessary to carefully choose what you devote yourself to especially when the sacrifice required is very high. Psychologists such as Leon Festinger, Theodore Newcomb and Fritz Hieder, etc. have observed that we tend to stay true to our previous commitment good or bad. Devotion requires making choices. Each of these choices have their pros & cons. If you devote yourself to a course whose demerits are very high compared to the advantages, there are every tendencies to always choose that path.
Here is a story to buttress this point. Joy, a nurse, lives with her boyfriend, Mich, who's is a salesman. Mich at a point lost his job and eventually became a chain-smoker. Joy wanted Mich to stop smoking and equally marry her. Mich never made any commitment to any of the above. At a point Joy quit the relationship after all her efforts on her desires were not successful. Joy got a call from Peter one evening. Peter happens to be Joy's boyfriend while at the college who is now back to town. He proposed to Joy who accepted the offer and relationship between them grew. Marrige date was slated. Mich heard of Joy's new life and decide to come back. He begged for a second chance which always fell on deaf ears. At a point he promise to quit smoking and will take her to the alter in three months. These sounds good to Joy who then accepted. She called off all marriage plans with Peter and severred all ties.
Mich moved back into Joy's apartment. Two years have passed now. Mich still smokes and no marriage date in view. Joy is devoted to him now than she ever was. She says choosing Mich over Peter is the best thing that ever happened to her.
Here's the big deal about commitment: the delusion of trying to stay true (and consistent) to our past.
Could Joy find somebody more handsome, smarter, happier and a non-smoker who is ready to take her to the alter? Probably. Here is the big issue about commitment. Once started we like to justify our previous choice. It happens to virtually every human alive.
Hence, it is best to weigh both sides ie the pro & cons before finally devoting our life to a particular course.
It is easier to resist at the beginning than at the ending --- Leonardo Da Vinci.
Till next time when we shall be reading a new episode, remember to always get better and become the best version of yourself.
