Food
Food is edible substance(s) that human eats for growth and or sound health. There are seven basic classes of food namely: dietary fibre, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, water, minerals. Humans have been advice to take adequate proportion of these classes of food for normal growth and healthy living.
Similarly, the mind just as the body needs to be feed for proper functioning. The principal ways of achieving this are through what he sees and hears. What he sees and hears can be via books, webinar, seminars, audiobooks, daily communication(s) etc. Philosophers all over the ages have advice that these media should be controlled. They emphasize that this control, taking reading of books as an example, should be done such that all spheres of human endeavor should be adequately addressed. This includes:
1) peace of mind;
2) health and energy;
3) loving relationships;
4) financial freedom;
5) worthy goals and ideals;
6) self knowledge and self awareness;
7) personal fulfillment.
Ignoring taking care of any of these aspects of life will cause stunted growth in such category and its attendant consequences. The greatest challenge you and I have is that not only do we ignore feeding one or more of these categories, it is that we fail all together to read any book that will benefit us in any of these categories. This makes our minds empty, weak and open to many negative influences from our immediate surroundings.
Here are some nuggets that will help us in maintaining a good reading culture:
a) choose to become a leader in your chosen profession;
b) make friends with bookworms;
c) decide to live a better life in all spheres of life such as finances, health, influence etc.;
d) make a list of 100 goals you want to get accomplished at a particular age in your life say at age 70 years;
e) join book reading community, physical or online such as goodreads, quora, reddit etc;
f) turn your back on any toxic relationship that does not contribute anything meaningful to your future;
g) action: take action in investing and reading great books. All other tips will not work until you take action.
Here are some tips in nurturing a healthy mind and becoming a voracious reader.
